In an ealier effort a few days ago, I made a mention of the Covid-19 and Pakistan's preparation for the unfolding imbroglio which is gaining its foothold at our doorstep. The larger picture also needs deliberation as how the world has responded to Covid-19 thus far. It is still unclear whether it has cohered the folks or has further widened the gulf between the inhabitants of the globe. To see the impact of Covid-19 we have to see the intervening events between it was first reported till it has taken the world by shock.
On global level, much has changed as vindicated by media reports from nook and corner of the world. Starting with mainland China, where it reportedly first erupted, we can follow a chain reaction in response to the altering situations. Declaring a worldwide health emergency was the most peculiar step taken by WHO. More glaring were the measures taken by individual nations of the world. It is quite commendable that world leaders have woken to the urgency of the issue and have taken actions at individual and collective level to fight the novel problem. Apart from efforts for making a vaccine to offering medical aid to eachother and even raising of joint funds for fighting the pandemic are truely appreciable. But, can the temerity of these actions outweigh the implications of other actions exhibited at individual and national levels?
As of today many nations have sealed their borders and few have taken extreme preventive steps by quarantining complete populations. It is like sequestering masses in the wake of imminent hostilities. All businesses except pharmacutical, medical and selected few others, have been closed down for the general good of the people. That in turn has given rise to skepticism and several conspiracy theories. After all we have numerous authors in the very West who have written extensively on artificially created disasters for economic gains. One such book is Shock Doctrine written by Naomi Klien wherein the author describes how fear and man-made disasters are used as a tool for earning big profits. That's however another side of the story. Let's stick to the topic at hand.
Social media's been spilling over with memes depicting how the advent of Corona Virus has unveiled the bitter realities behind the tales of highly civilised societies. People in the highly civilised West have been seen fighting over groceries and household items in super-stores as stocks were running out in markets. This much of patience in the face of a viral pandemic? Surprising!
There is a general despondent milieu spread all over the world and the high morals have been disregarded by few impatient and over-obsessed folks from around the world. This is generally the fear at play which has taken over the state of normalcy of the human habitat.
As far as the strict measures by nations across the world are concerned, we see a big change in the hitherto globalised world. The closing of borders was unthought-of up until the pandemic broke loose like wrath being unleashed upon the poor souls. Schengen Zone has faced or might face the worst impact of the closure. The interdependent economies of the Zone's juxtaposed nations will hardly be able to face this brunt independently. They have already lost too much in the past few weeks. The airports operations coming to a halt and worldwide desparation has caused too much to worry about. Ironically few African nations have also banned entry from European countries for the fear of spreading Covid-19. That was never expected by a highly developed Europe. Ironically that is how the equations have changed in the recent past.
Individuals and nations are dumbfounded by severity of the problem. There is no doubt that people have taken extreme care for prevention against Covid-19 but the death toll is rising at a very high rate. That's worrisome as we are faced with one of the toughest times in recent history. The seclusion of populations, closing of businesses, worldwide health emergency and standing still of the worldly affairs coupled with our human behaviour raises the question whether we have been united or divided by the Covid-19 as both constituent parts of the question merit deliberation. Let's see how the human race deals with this challenge in the days to follow.
