Yesterday I booked a Careem and was travelling to my home when the Captain engaged in a discussion with me over the govt's ineffective policies, its alleged neglect of the poor and the plummeting value of PKR against USD. In a short while I understood he wasn't happy with the govt at all. I listened patiently to his plight but at the same time tried to make him understand that's how it is when we adopt firefighting attitude towards every problem and ignore prevention beforehand.
I told him what it would be like if we had not wasted all those years before the advent of PTI's govt. He would give me logical answers but at the same time would try to swerve around the issues and hide behind the mantra of alleged support of the establishment for PTI and price-hike. Anyways during the short journey I took following lessons and want to share them herein:
A. Ours is a politically active but emotional population.
B. We want our leaders to have superhuman-like powers who can replace all bad stuff with good as soon as they hold offices.
C. We don't believe in progressive change and instead believe in miracles to work for us.
D. We are a nation which believes in the supremacy of Islam but tends to ignore its golden principles altogether.
E. We have no qualms about expressing our support for the corrupt elite who had brought the economy to the brink of collapse but we cannot take the reforms to be stable for good.
In all, we need to think what we are and where we want to be. If we are satisfied with being a poorly-managed economy, fair enough! But then we should stop dreaming about taking Kashmir, being an independent economic power living without any foreign assistance.
