It is somehow enthraling to see how the world treats our departure, sans the way we treat it. Pervez Musharraf would not have been my preoccupation but lying in my hospital bed today, where I am detained for a minor issue, I had nothing but to run errands on the internet after watching the news regarding the death of one of my favourite military leaders of the modern world.
While it is not quite astonishing how the media presented eulogistic reports on his death -- since he was the harbinger of free media in Pakistan -- it however is fascinating to see that his once bête noires are making sure he never died an unsung death. The people who had always been daggers-drawn with him are not openly denouncing all that he did to them. If one was to think of them as highly refined ladies and gentlemen of our society for not badmouthing him, it would be unfair as the kind of mudslinging that oscillates among our political leadership bespeaks their low moral standards quite often.
As an honest observer one has to see all that was done by Pervez Musharraf while he was in power. But before that one has to take stocks of everything that could go wrong with the political system of Pakistan. As a successor to Jahangir Karamat, who preferred an honourable exit over the ordeal of being removed from Office by Nawaz Sharif, he was to be the most trusted man amongst all the candidates. It's another side of the story how his name was tipped to Nawaz Sharif by Lt Gen (Retd) Chaudhry Iftikhar Ali Khan through his brother and Nawaz's closest aide, Chaudhry Nisar. But yet again Nawaz Sharif was unable to get along with his new choice and the results were ominous. Kargil and its aftermath, the ensuing blamegame and the fallout of rising distrust between both are no more a hidden secret. His ascention to the most powerful position could not have been possible if the Kingmakers had been a little lucid in their thinking. Anyways, let's not pester ourselves much with this.
A friend of mine had done a little hardwork and had shared a long list of the projects he had intiated with few which were completed during his lengthy stint. Few include: local bodies govt system, establishment of HEC, NADRA, NDMA, OGRA, PEMRA, NEPRA, military equipment industries, work in health sector and many others. Besides his good work, he was also blamed for many a thing. He is to take the blame for initiating Kargil Conflict, overthrowing an elected government, being soft on Kashmir Issue, plunging into USA's war on terror, Laal Masjid Operation, killing of Akbar Bugti, and giving MQM a freehand. But overall he is thought to have fared better, given the temporary relief from the West on the pretext of being their ally in Afghanistan. But this again is debatable since everything he built crumbled like a house of cards as soon as he left office. His term can also be remembered as an ephemeral phase of ease in an ever-worsening situation of Pakistan.
Now that he is no more let's hope he finds eternal peace and let's hope Pakistan prospers in the days to follow.
Pakistan Zindabad!
That’s the reality of life
